A special unit of the Israeli army killed a leading member of Islamic Jihad near Jenin in the north of the West Bank before dawn today, the radical Palestinian movement said.
Moammar Daraghme (30), was killed in an ambush in the Palestinian village of Yamun, 10 kms from Jenin, the group said. Other Jihad militants in a car with him managed to escape.
The Israeli army, which regularly carries out so-called targetted killings on wanted Palestinian militants, refused to comment.
Islamic Jihad has been responsible for a number of suicide bombings and other anti-Israeli attacks.
Later this afternoon, a Palestinian was shot dead and an Israeli policeman was wounded when a Palestinian gunman opened fire in occupied east Jerusalem, Israeli police said.
