Eleven Irish couples are being questioned by police in Mexico investigating alleged child trafficking.

An official said four of the 10 children seized during the investigation involving Irish couples in western Mexico were sexually abused.

Jalisco state attorney general Tomas Coronado said a medical examination determined the abuse. He gave no other details.

Mr Coronado said 11 Irish couples were being questioned in connection with the case and 15 Irish citizens had already spoken to investigators in the city of Guadalajara.

Last week authorities detained four women with children aged between two months and two years. A woman told police her sister-in-law was trying to sell one of her babies and "rent" the other one. Seven children were seized from Irish couples.

Two men and seven women have been arrested in the case.
