Irish jockey Richard Hughes suffered a suspected broken leg in an accident before the first race at Newmarket today.

Hughes was fired into the ground when his mount Carmelita reared up entering the stalls for the EBF Alington Maiden Stakes.

The horse was withdrawn from the race while Hughes was taken back to the weighing-room in an ambulance. He was then taken to hospital.

He was immediately ruled out for the rest of the day and will miss his three intended rides on Arc day at Longchamp tomorrow. - PA
