Sir David McMurtry (61), who is the chairman and chief executive of Renishaw, based in Gloucestershire, was born in Clontarf and holds dual Irish and British nationality.

He attended Mountjoy School, Clontarf, now known as Mount Temple School. When he was 16 he became an engineering apprentice at a Rolls-Royce factory in Bristol.

A Renishaw spokesman said Sir David would be formally invested with the title at Buckingham Palace later this year. He will be appointed a Knight Bachelor.
