A man has appeared in court in relation to the alleged smuggling of €30,000 worth of cigarettes and tobacco into Ireland.

The 40-year old was arrested at Dublin airport on Tuesday after customs officers discovered Marlboro, Gauloises, Aspen and Kent brand cigarettes along with perfumed tobacco in his baggage.

A total of 20,400 cigarettes and 57.50kg of tobacco were seized, a potential loss to the exchequer of €23,000.

The Danish passport holder had arrived in Dublin on a flight from Baghdad, a Revenue spokeswoman said.
