Irish man assaulted in Sydney discharged from hospital

A young Irish man who was put in an induced coma after he suffered a brain injury following an assault in Sydney, Australia, has been discharged from hospital and is recuperating at home.

Jason Cierans (29) of Mount Nebo Avenue, Cork city, was hospitalised on August 22nd after he was attacked outside a pub at Bondi Junction. He spent several weeks in the intensive care unit at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney.

His friends, relatives and neighbours fundraised for his treatment. His parents and brother are assisting him as he recovers in his Sydney home.

Meanwhile, an Argentinian national was last month granted bail in Sydney over his alleged assault of Mr Cierans.

Adrian Martinez (30) was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Cierans outside the Tea Gardens pub in the eastern suburb of Bondi Junction.

He is due to return to Waverley local court on October 22nd. Another man (27) has been charged with affray over the incident.

Mr Cierans has been in Australia for six years. He underwent emergency surgery after the attack. It is believed he was punched as he crossed the road and fell to the ground, hitting his head.

Doctors relieved pressure on his brain and placed him in a medically induced coma to stabilise his condition following the attack.
