Cork man arrested after discovery of €70k worth of drugs in car

Detectives recover kilo of cocaine which they believe was destined for local Cork market

Gardaí in Cork have arrested a man in his 30s for questioning following the discovery and seizure of € 70,000 worth of drugs when they stopped a car in the suburbs on Thursday.

Officers from the Cork City Divisional Drugs Squad found the kilo of cocaine they searched a car near Bessborough off the Skehard Road in Blackrock at around 5pm.

The driver of the car, who is originally from the Mahon area, was arrested and taken to the Bridewell Garda station for questioning about the drugs seizure.

The man was detained under drugs trafficking legislation which allows gardaí detain suspects for up to seven days before they have to be charged or released without charge.

It’s understood that the seizure was part of an intelligence led operation by members of the Cork City Divisional Drugs Squad targeting drug dealing on the south side of the city.

The drugs, which gardaí believe were destined for the local market, have been sent to the State Forensic Laboratory to confirm that it is cocaine and to establish its purity.
