Bidding 2021 welcome: New Year's Day in pictures

PLUCKY FELLA: Brody McWilliams Brown, weighing in at 7lb 10oz, born to Jennifer McWilliams, was the first baby born in the Republic in 2021, at four seconds after midnight, at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin. Jennifer was diagnosed with Covid-19 on December 22nd. She alerted the hospital prior to her arrival, and all protocols were followed to ensure a safe birth.

HOOKS AND ARROWS: The Sun rises on New Year's Day over Hook Lighthouse, Hook Head, Co Wexford. The lighthouse  normally hosts a traditional "Arrow Ceremony" on New Year's Day, an event dating back to 1687, in which up to 50 archers join a "Cathaoirleach" to fire an arrow into the sea and claim the waters of the estuary.
