Ireland crushed Italy in Galway today to book a place in the IRB World Cup in South Africa later this year.

Ciaran Fitzgerald's side ran in nine tries at the Showgrounds with man of the match scrum-half Brian O'Riordan scoring a hat-trick.

Ballymena flanker Neil McMillan scored the opening try within the first two minutes with Eoghan Hickey converting.

McMillan's back row partner Dennis Leamy added the second try in the 10th minute before the Italians hit back with a try from hooker Michele Rizzo two minutes later.

That pegged back the Irish for a while until the home side sprang to life just before the break. Hickey kicked a penalty in the 33rd minute before O'Riordan struck with two tries either side of a touchdown from captain and second row Matt McCullough to leave Ireland 34-7 up at half-time.

Centre Diego Sacca restored some Italian pride with a try five minutes after the interval but Ireland stepped up a gear once again and cruised through to the final whistle.

Prop Bryan Young carried over the line in the 45th minute before full-back Scott Young added another try soon after. O'Riordan completed his hat-trick with a darting run to score under the posts before centre Barry Lynn scored Ireland's ninth try in the final minute, less than a minute after coming on as a substitute.
