Mick McCarthy’s side are ranked 18th. It is the highest position Ireland has achieved under McCarthy’s management.

The Republic of Ireland accomplished their highest ever position in August 1993 when, under the guidance of Jack Charlton, they were ranked sixth in the world.

Argentina has, on the back of their awesome South American World Cup qualifying campaign, ousted Brazil from second spot. France, the reigning World and European champions, remain in first place.

Belgium, who eliminated Mick McCarthy’s side at the play-off stages en route to France 98, are the most significant movers this month, rising 13 places to 20th after their recent play-off victory over the Czech Republic.

England drop from ninth to 10th while The Netherlands remain in the top ten despite failing to reach the finals in Korea and Japan next summer.

Iran, who lost to the Republic of Ireland in their recent play-off, rise six places to 29th.

Scotland drop two places to 49th while Northern Ireland are unchanged at 90th. Wales are up one spot to 100th.
