Baghdad - Iraq has said its air defences may have hit a Western warplane that was flying over northern Iraq.

A military spokesman told Iraqi News Agency: "The evidence points to the probability that one of the hostile aircraft was hit."

US and British planes have been policing "no-fly zones" since 1991, regularly coming under fire from Iraqi gunners.
