A 64-year-old prisoner hanged himself in his cell at Arbour Hill Prison using a knotted bed sheet, Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

The man, with an address in Co Sligo, was found hanging from the bars in the window of his cell at 7.10 p.m. on August 13th last. He had been checked on by prison staff 10 minutes earlier.

Sgt Brian Fitzpatrick, Bridewell Garda station, said he was handed two letters, one addressed to the dead man's wife and the other to the prison governor. They indicated an intention to take his own life.

The jury returned a verdict of suicide.
