A French meat factory worker, who has been made a ward of court because of serious injuries sustained in a road accident, is to be paid £550,000 and costs in a settlement approved at the High Court yesterday.

Mr Pierre Wilmouth (48) - through his father Ernest Wilmouth, of Merlebach, France - sued Ms Kathleen Jeffries of Droylsden, Manchester, England.

Mr Wilmouth received serious head and other injuries when a car owned and driven by Ms Jeffries struck him near Tullaheady, Nenagh, Co Tipperary on October 24th, 1992.

Mr Anthony Kidney SC, for Mr Wilmouth, said his client would be cared for by the French state medical system for the rest of his life, but it was agreed a payment of £275,000 should be made to the French social services out of the settlement. Mr Justice Johnson approved the payment.
