Indonesian police shot at a group of protesters today in the ravaged city of Palangkaraya on Borneo island and wounded at least five, witnesses said.

The shooting of indigenous Dayak protesters came minutes after President Abdurrahman Wahid flew out of the city following a visit to the area where Dayaks last month killed hundreds of migrants from Madura island and forced tens of thousands to flee.

"After the president left, the mob turned angry", a witness said.

"The police tried to halt them with warning shots but it only made the mob fiercer.

"They threw things at the police. So the police shot at their bodies. I saw five people wounded. There may be more as there were thousands."

Earlier the protesters demanded that the government expel all Madurese migrants from the island.
