Quality scheme for Irish chicken launched

A new campaign aiming to reassure consumers of the quality and traceability of Irish chicken was launched yesterday.

Some 400 retail outlets are taking part in the nationwide promotion, which is the first joint venture between Bord Bia and the Irish Poultry Processors Association. The campaign encourages consumers to look for the Bord Bia quality mark when purchasing chicken.

Earlier this year, a European Food Safety Authority survey revealed that more than one in four chickens reared in Ireland is infected with the salmonella bacterium. These findings, coupled with increased consumer concerns about the quality of imported chicken, have resulted in the origin of poultry becoming a big concern to shoppers.

"Bord Bia welcomes this initiative from the poultry industry to position quality assured chicken as a premium product with full traceability in outlets throughout the country," said Aidan Cotter, chief executive of Bord Bia.

Three-quarters of all chicken produced in Ireland is consumed on the domestic market, with the remainder being exported, primarily to the UK.

However, up to 90 per cent of chicken used in the catering trade in Ireland is imported, often from countries where there are virulent forms of salmonella. There are over 450 producers and six major processors participating in the Bord Bia poultry quality assurance scheme.

Appeal over Amsterdam killing

The owner of an Irish pub in Amsterdam has appealed to Dutch police to "dust off the file" into its investigation into the death of a young Kilkenny barman who was killed two years ago today in the city.

Damien Mooney, (26), from Cloneen, Clough, Co Kilkenny, died in a knife attack on his way home from a night out. It is thought that he was the victim of a drug addict who tried to grab a watch which was a birthday present from his father.

Nobody has ever been charged. But his employer at O'Donnells Irish bar, Séamus Dougharty, says the Dutch authorities have fallen down in not bringing the killer to justice.

A suspect from the former Dutch colony of Surinam was taken into custody months after the attack after he was recognised on CCTV footage beside the dead man minutes earlier. Several weeks later he was released.

Mr Dougharty said yesterday that the person who killed Mr Mooney must be charged. He said they had heard nothing about what progress, if any, had been made since the arrest and release of a suspect.

A Garda spokesman said they are looking for a man aged about 40, six foot tall and described as being bald with a grey beard. He was wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, Nike runners and a grey hoodie.

Gardaí want anyone who saw anything out of the ordinary to contact Killaloe Garda station on 061-376242.
