Toothpaste with toxic content seized
Fake toothpaste containing a toxic chemical has been seized from a shop in Galway.
The toothpaste was falsely packaged and labelled as Sensodyne toothpaste and is identical to counterfeit products found on sale in Britain two weeks ago, writes Eithne Donnellan, Health Correspondent.
The Department of Health said there was no evidence that significant quantities of the fake product were on sale here, but the Irish Medicines Board and HSE environmental health officers were keeping the matter under review.
"This fake product contains diethylene glycol which is toxic if ingested. However, as toothpaste would only be ingested in small quantities, if at all, there is no significant risk to public health," the department said.
"Toothpaste purchased in Ireland which is labelled in English only is genuine; the public need only be concerned if the labelling is both in English and Arabic."
Waterworks at Terryland closed
Galway City Council has confirmed that the old waterworks at Terryland has been closed for several weeks, but the boil water notice still continues for 70,000 residents in the city and south Connemara.
The Terryland plant was identified as one of several sources for the cryptosporidium parasite in the city's drinking water.
