Devices found in Fairview made safe

Army bomb experts carried out controlled explosions on two devices found in Fairview in Dublin early yesterday morning.

The packages were not set to detonate but the components could have been assembled for use elsewhere, the Defence Forces said."The remains of these improvised explosive devices were handed over to gardaí at the scene for investigation into the incident," a spokesman said.

400,000 target for Focus stars

A homeless charity aims to raise €400,000 for homeless services by asking firms to sponsor stars on its giant Christmas tree in Dublin's Grafton Street.

The annual Focus Ireland "Sponsor a Star" appeal has received €2.5 million over the past six years. Focus Ireland said more people risk becoming homeless due to the economic downturn, and therefore support from firms is more important than ever.

Man (23) charged after gardaí hurt

A 23-year-old man appeared at a special sitting of Waterford District Court on Saturday night charged in connection with an incident at a Halloween bonfire that resulted in four gardaí being treated in hospital.

The charges arose after a dispute led to violence at Bianconi Drive in Clonmel where about 30 youths were at a bonfire on Friday night.

Andrew Freyne, Elm Park, Clonmel, appeared in court on Saturday charged with assault causing harm and of acting contrary to the terms of his "temporary permanent" release from prison.

Judge Gerard Furlong granted him free legal aid and remanded him in custody to appear at Carrick-on-Suir District Court next Thursday.

Cork golf club damaged in fire

Firefighters spent several hours last night fighting a blaze at Muskerry Golf Club in Cloghroe near Blarney in Co Cork, writes Barry Roche.

The fire started after a golf buggy caught fire and spread to the clubhouse causing extensive damage to one side of the building. Over 20 firefighters from Cork city and county attended the scene of the fire after the alarm was raised at about 9.15pm.
