Two remanded over murder
A 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth appeared in court in Limerick yesterday charged with the murder of a Ukrainian teenager last summer.
Sixteen-year-old Roman Vysochan, who had been living with his family in Westbury, Co Clare, died following a stabbing incident.
Yesterday at Limerick District Court, John O’Loughlin (20), Cecil Street, was charged with the murder of the teenager at Carraig Midhe, Corbally, on May 10th, 2008.
Det Garda Enda Haugh told the court Mr O’Loughlin made no reply when formally charged at Henry Street Garda station.
A 17-year-old youth – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – also appeared before Limerick District Court yesterday on the same charge.
Both of the accused were also charged yesterday with assaulting a Limerick teenager at Carraig Midhe on May 10th last year.
Judge Aeneas McCarthy remanded both defendants in custody until Thursday.
Hopes ferry route will be reintroduced
Hopes remain high for the reintroduction of the Swansea-Cork ferry route amid tense negotiations this week for the purchase of a ship to resume the tourist service.
A business consortium from Cork made what is believed to be the highest bid at an auction in Finland earlier this month. However, the proposed new ferry remains the subject of private negotiations.
K2 mountaineer remembered
Mountaineer Gerard McDonnell, who died shortly after becoming the first Irish person to climb K2, the world’s most dangerous mountain, was honoured by Limerick County Council at a ceremony attended by members of his family.
He reached the summit of the world’s second highest mountain in August 2008.
At yesterday’s ceremony, John Gallahue of Limerick County Council described McDonnell (37) as a proud Limerick man who pushed the boundaries of human endurance to the limits.
Fellow mountaineer Pat Falvey said anyone who had the privilege to climb with McDonnell would forever remember him as a loyal friend, great team player, brilliant climber and proud Irishman.
Man in rape case to be sentenced
A Cork man who raped his girlfriend’s daughter and sexually assaulted her sister and his own daughter will be sentenced today at the Central Criminal Court. The 54-year-old pleaded guilty to 10 sample counts of sexually assaulting the victims at addresses in Cork city.
