Spanish police arrest four

Police in Spain have arrested four men accused of robbing an Irish couple at knife-point outside their Costa Blanca holiday home.

The tourists were mugged as they returned to their apartment from a night out in the popular resort of Orihuela Costa near Alicante.

One of the attackers put a knife to the Irishman's throat while an accomplice took his wife's handbag following a struggle as two pals waited in a getaway car. A taxi driver who rushed to their aid managed to detain one of the robbers before calling police. Officers arrested the other three near the scene.

Prayers for young victim of road crash

Prayers were offered at Masses yesterday for a 15-year-old boy from west Cork who has died in hospital following a collision earlier this week.

Jake O'Donoghue from Innishannon was out cycling near his home with a group of friends on Wednesday when he was in collision with a car. The incident happened just after 4.30pm at Drumkeen on the Bandon Road.

The teenager was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where his condition was described as critical. He died in hospital yesterday evening.

His family maintained a vigil by his bedside following the crash.

Jake was remembered locally as a very friendly and outgoing boy who was captain of the youth Valley Rovers GAA club. He was a student at Hamilton High School in Bandon, Co Cork.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the crash to contact them. Anyone with information should contact gardaí in Bandon on 023- 8841145.
