LOS ANGELES - Zsa Zsa Gabor went home from a hospital on Wednesday, four weeks after undergoing hip-replacement surgery and received the kind of paparazzi treatment reserved for starlets a quarter of her age.

Signs of truce between rebels and Berlusconi

ROME – Signs of a possible truce between Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and rebels within his coalition emerged yesterday after the conservative leader praised the “constructive approach” of some dissidents.

Mr Berlusconis comments were regarded as an olive branch by many of the supporters of Gianfranco Fini, the lower house speaker who dramatically split from his long-time ally last month and has since set up a breakaway group. – (Reuters)

Around 40 die in DRC truck crash

KINSHASA – Around 40 people were killed when a truck overloaded with passengers ploughed into Africa’s deepest lake, authorities said yesterday. The truck plunged into Lake Tanganyika in Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday. Road crashes are common in Congo, whose infrastructure has been battered by war. – (Reuters)

George Michael on drink drive charge

LONDON – British singer George Michael was charged yesterday with possessing cannabis and driving under the influence of drink or drugs following a car crash early last month, London police said.

Michael (47), who has had a series of run-ins with the law for recreational drug use, was released on bail to appear in court in Highbury (a north London neighbourhood) on August 24th, a police statement added. – (Reuters)
