€75,000 for Garda assault
A man who sued the Garda and the State for assault and wrongful arrest following an incident outside a pub 10 years ago has been awarded €75,000 damages by a jury at the High Court.
David Lawlor (34), of Kilbarrack Road, Kilbarrack, Dublin, claimed he was assaulted during the incident outside the Bloody Stream pub in Howth on December 29th, 2001, and in a patrol car and a Garda station. The Garda Commissioner, the Minister for Justice and the Attorney General denied his claims.
Newspapers fined
In Cork District Court yesterday Judge Con O'Leary found Geraldine Kennedy, Editor of
The Irish Times, Tim Vaughan, Editor of the
Irish Examinerand Maurice Gubbins, Editor of the
Evening Echo,guilty of contempt of court for reporting certain facts in their respective newspapers which the judge found commented on matters which were heard by him in camera and should not have been reported.
He imposed a fine of €1,000 on each of the three editors.
A barrister representing the newspapers, Ray Boland, indicated to the court that the newspapers intend to appeal the decision to the High Court by way of case stated.
