Call to honour Rory Gallagher in Cork
Rory Gallagher should be honoured in his home town of Cork with a tribute concert similar to the
Vibe for Philo
, which celebrates the music of Phil Lynott, promoter Peter Aiken said yesterday.
“I’d love to do something for Rory here in Cork some year, maybe get a good rock band and have a few guest guitarists - someone like Brian May or Johnny Marr - with them playing as a tribute to Rory in the same sort of way that they remember Phil Lynott in Dublin.”
Aiken announced that Bob Dylan and Paul Simon would play later this year at the Marquee series of concerts.
Water Unit joins search for islander
The Garda Water Unit yesterday joined the continued search off the Aran Islands for an Inis Mór resident who was reported missing over a week ago.
Photographer Brendan Gill (34), Cill Ronáin, Inis Mór, was last seen on February 26th on the island and his bicycle was found close by. His jacket was recovered from the sea several days later.
It is believed he may have slipped while taking photographs and fallen into the sea. The RNLI Aran Island lifeboat, the Irish Coast Guard Sikorsky helicopter from Shannon, local boats and residents have been involved in the search for him over the past 10 days.
North abuse survivors help shape inquiry
Victims and survivors of institutional abuse in Northern Ireland held their first meeting yesterday with a special Northern Executive task force to hear views on what shape an official inquiry into institutional abuse should take.
The meeting of the Interdepartmental Taskforce on Historical Institutional Abuse took place in Armagh. There will be further meetings with victims and survivors over the coming weeks.
“Survivors have recounted to us their experiences and it is only right that they play a role in shaping how we respond to the issues that continue to impact so heavily on their lives,” First Minister Peter Robinson said after yesterday’s meeting.
Gardaí say Limerick fatal fire an accident
Gardaí in Limerick say the death of a pensioner in a house fire at the weekend was an accident.
Francis Allen (72) died in the fire which broke out at his home at St Munchin’s Street, St Mary’s Park, on Sunday night.
Mr Allen, whose body was found in a downstairs room, was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is understood that the fire started in the rear of the terraced house before it spread and destroyed the entire building.
A number of neighbours yesterday described how they tried to save the pensioner after the alarm was raised. “We couldn’t get near the house because of the flames, which were out of control,” said neighbour Patrick Barry.
