Che Guevara companion dies

HAVANA – Alberto Granado, who accompanied fellow Argentine Ernesto “Che” Guevara on a trip immortalised in the film The Motorcycle Diaries, died in Cuba on Saturday at the age of 88, Cuba’s state-run media reported.

The report said his ashes would be spread in Argentina, Cuba and Venezuela.

The famous trip across South America, begun in late 1951 on Mr Granado’s old British motorcycle, supposedly awakened in Guevara a sympathy for the poor and desire for social justice that turned him into a leftist revolutionary.

After the 1959 revolution Guevara joined the Cuban government. He died in Bolivia in 1967 while trying to start a rebel force there.

The Motorcycle Diaries was based on Guevara's diary of the trip and on Granado's book Traveling with Che Guevara: The Making of a Revolutionary. – (Reuters)

Estonia’s coalition set for re-election

TALLINN – Estonia’s centre-right government was headed for victory in yesterday’s election, with the coalition winning credit for a successful adoption of the euro and setting the Baltic state on a path out of deep recession.

Analysts expect a new government to keep on a path of fiscal restraint in the debt-ridden single currency zone. Keeping a tight rein on finances allowed the country to become the 17th euro zone member in January.

With 97 per cent of votes counted, the coalition was heading for a total 56 seats in the 101-seat house, five more than it has in the outgoing legislature. – (Reuters)
