Nigeria polls delayed over logistics chaos

ABUJA – Nigeria postponed parliamentary and presidential elections by a week yesterday after failing to get logistics prepared in time, a major embarrassment for a nation hoping to break with a history of chaotic polls. Africa’s most populous country will now hold parliamentary elections on April 9th, presidential elections on April 16th and governorship elections in its 36 states on April 26th.

The state had to abort parliamentary elections on Saturday after voting materials failed to arrive at polling stations. – (Reuters)

Spanish PM not to fight next election

MADRID – Spanish prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, his popularity hammered by the euro zone’s highest jobless rate, said at the weekend that he would not seek a third term in 2012 elections, which his Socialists are expected to lose.

Popular deputy prime minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba and defence minister Carme Chacon are seen as possible successors to revive the ruling Socialists, (PSOE) who trail the centre-right Popular Party by up to 15 points in opinion polls. – (Reuters)
