THE weather is expected to be extremely cold over the weekend but Met Eireann is not predicting any snow showers.

Today will be cold with occasional sunny spells, and mostly dry. Motorists are warned of icy patches.

Tomorrow temperatures will be just above freezing for most of the day. Met Eireann says there may be snow or sleet showers next week, most probably on Tuesday.

Temperatures for the weekend are expected to be between 3 and 7 Celsius, but frost will generally tend to clear slowly.

Flights to and from Dublin Airport were delayed by up to four hours yesterday because of snow and fog in Britain and elsewhere in Europe. An Aer Lingus spokeswoman said Heathrow was the worst affected and the delays were compounded by extra post Christmas flights.

However, she advised travellers to check in on time as not all flights were delayed.

Snow storms swept Britain, delaying hundreds of travellers for hours. Several inches of snow settled in the south east, affecting Britain's three main airports, Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.

A spokesman for Stansted Airport said that no flights to Ireland were cancelled, but delays occurred throughout the day.

"All Ryanair flights were delayed for about two to three hours. Stansted had a light dusting of snow and the problem was clearing the three mile runway," he said.

Throughout the UK hundreds of road accidents left many motorists stranded in freezing conditions. A London Weather spokesman said the weekend would be dry but temperatures would fall several degrees.
