Survivors from the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center raised the hope today that others may be alive in the service tunnels which linked the twin towers to other buildings.

"There are tunnels underground that connect all the five or six buildings below ground. There is a possibilities that people are still alive, said Mr Hursley Lever, a mechanic who was at work in the Center when it was hit by two hijacked airliners on Tuesday.

"If you know the building, you'll get from one building to another," said ms Marlene Cruz, who also worked in the towers.

"It's pretty well constructed, so if somebody is down there, they may be still alive," she said.

"You would never know that this existed. Only the workers know how to get around," she added.

The two survivors were interviewed by AFPin Manhattan's Bellevue hospital, where they were being treated for injuries. They were both in the elevator of the north tower, the first to be hit, and got out before the building collapsed.
