A man has been arrested following an attempted robbery of a house in Co Dublin this morning in which he was overpowered by the homeowner.

Two men gained entrance to a home in Lucan at about 7.50am but were confronted by the male homeowner. A struggle broke out, during which one of the men produced a knife.

A number of neighbours intervened and held down one of the robbers until the gardaí arrived on the scene. The second man made his escape over the back fence.

The homeowner's wife and three young children were in the house at the time of the incident but were unhurt.

Both the homeowner and one of the men who gained access to the house were taken to Lucan hospital for treatment.

Gardaí confirmed this afternoon that a man is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Lucan Garda Station.
