Home victory for unstoppable champion

Newly crowned world champion Michael Schumacher swept to victory in the German Grand Prix today.

Schumacher has not put a foot wrong this week since clinching his record-equalling fifth drivers' crown at the French Grand Prix at Magny Cours seven days ago.

Top of the practice standings on both days, Schumacher then clinched pole yesterday in dramatic style with his last run of the session, before then leading from start to finish at Hockenheim.

It has been textbook stuff from Schumacher, who has proven he is simply head and shoulders above his peers, taking the chequered flag by 10.5 seconds from Juan Pablo Montoya at the end of the 67-lap race. Prior to this weekend, Schumacher's Hockenheim record was a miserable one as he had never been on pole, while his only previous race victory in nine starts had been seven years ago.

The 33-year-old had not even finished on the podium in the last four years, but a re-styling of the track - shortened in distance - and with confidence at its peak, Schumacher dominated and proved he is still hungry for more.

The victory means Schumacher has again equalled the record for the number of race wins in a season - now nine - one he set in 1995, 2000 and 2001, with Nigel Mansell doing so originally in 1992.

With five grands prix remaining this season, it seems certain Schumacher will finally break the record.
