Speculation is rife in Cobh that the town may feature in a maritime disaster movie, following a visit there recently by Hollywood executives.

The low-key visit by the unnamed film-makers has raised expectations that the sinking of the Lusitania near Cork in 1915, with the loss of more than 1,000 lives, could provide the subject matter for the film.

The executives visited Cobh's Queenstown centre which has extensive records concerning both the Titanic and Lusitania.

According to some Cobh residents who met the Hollywood representatives, the Lusitania story is seen as a perfect follow-up to Titanic, the film which broke all box office records.

Residents were extremely concerned that Cobh was practically ignored in Titanic, However, it is understood that Cobh will be part of a remake of the film.

While the project has not been confirmed, there is great enthusiasm about the prospect of a film being made on location in Ireland. Cobh believes the town could enjoy huge benefits from the tourism spin-off.

The wreck of the vessel, torpedoed by the Germans, lies off the Old Head of Kinsale and is owned by US millionaire Mr Gregg Bemis.

While courts in the US have backed his right to ownership of the ship, a Government order has dictated that no divers may visit the site of the wreck until ownership has been decided under international law.
