A Dublin heroin addict who raided a post office and assaulted the 71-year-old post-mistress was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday.

Nicola Casey (22), of Sean O'Casey Avenue, Summerhill, was told her case would be reviewed in two years, and that if she was drug-free for 18 months before then, the judge would consider suspending the remainder of the sentence.

At Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court she pleaded guilty to robbing Clogherhead post office, Co Louth, of over £4,000, on April 17th last, and to assaulting Ms Catherine Reid, with intent to rob her. Casey has refused to identify a man who robbed the post office with her. She told gardai they had been high on drugs at the time and "badly needed" the money for more drugs.
