Air bags may save your life during a crash but cause hearing loss as a side effect according to research published in the current British Medical Journal. The work by a team from St James's University Hospital, Leeds, noted that the explosion that fills the air bag can generate 150170 decibels over a fraction of a second. Such levels could cause acoustic trauma, they warn, after studying two cases of hearing loss and persistent tinnitus which they believe resulted from air bag inflation.
