Personal/family:Married to Marie with four children - Julie, Kenneth, David and Peter, who died from sudden death at the age of 15.

Prof William McKenna at the heart hospital, London for his support, encouragement and guidance.
What other career might you have chosen?
Law.
If you could grant three wishes for the health service, what would they be?
Universal health insurance for all citizens, a bi-partisan approach from our politicians to health issues, and a comprehensive healthcare programme for the elderly.
What is your greatest fear?
A sudden death in the family.
Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?
Yes, and I am told I was very compliant.
When or where are you happiest?
With my family sitting on a beach in Kerry.
How do you cope with stress?
I don't cope with stress very well but I try to anticipate it.
What is the trait you most admire in yourself?
Determination to succeed.
What is the trait you most dislike in yourself?
Impatience with others.
Do you use alternative or complementary medicine or therapies?
No.
Who or what makes you laugh?
Listening to Peter O'Connor from Kilmoyley in Kerry spinning a story with the wonderful flow of language that Kerry people possess. My grandson Dara also makes me laugh.
What is your motto?
You can't beat someone who won't quit.
What is your favourite TV or radio programme?
The History channel, Lyric FM and Raidió Na Gaeltachta.
What books would you bring to a desert island?
The Second World War 10 volume set edited by JA Hammerton, The Building of the Canadian Westby James Hedges and Heart and Soulby Trevor Brennan.
