Neil Johnson, chief executive, Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
On balance, yes, because of my work I’d be acutely aware of the elements of my lifestyle that need to be improved. In this job, there are very long hours with lots of evening and weekend work so it’s difficult to make sure I have regular meal times.
How often do you exercise?
I have a colleague who is a cardiac dietitian and one who is a physio so in the past two weeks I’ve started to talk to them about my own fitness.
As a schoolboy, I used to run a lot so I had a good base of fitness that got me through my 40s. I’m now 50 so I’m making an attempt to do more and have joined Fit for Life. I try to do a 30-40 minute walk every day.
Do you get your five a day?
On the veg yes, on fruit no. Even though I am constantly surrounded by people talking about diet, it’s only in the past few weeks that I’m consciously looking at what I’m eating.
Do you worry?
As a kid, I’d say my parents thought I was the biggest worrier in the world. That has abated with age. I wouldn’t consider myself a worrier but nor am I one of these happy go lucky types who I envy.
I’m balanced in that I worry when there is a reason to worry.
What do you do to relax?
I never developed the habit of reading, which I regret. I’ve started to take it up now. For me, relaxing is pottering in the garden, walking the dogs or spending time with my wife and children. Watching them play sport is the chill out.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
Chocolate biscuits, banoffi pie and everything sweet.
In the evening if there are any chocolate biscuits around, it’s a massive temptation.
