A further 13,765 new cases of Covid-19 were reported on Christmas Day, the highest single-day figure for infections in the State since the pandemic began.
Saturday’s number surpassed Christmas Eve’s previously record breaking figure of 11,182 cases.
Despite the steep rise in confirmed cases of the virus, the number of patients in the country’s hospitals with it continues to fall.

As of 8am today, 378 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 87 are in ICU.
As of 8am on Saturday, there were 378 patients in the country’s hospitals with the virus, down from 393 on Christmas Eve. There 87 patients in intensive care, down from 89 the day before.

“In anticipation of large volumes of case numbers over the coming period the daily case number announced will be based on positive SARS-CoV-2 results uploaded to the HSE COVID Care Tracker the preceding day,” the Department of Health said.
The Department said the data is provisional.
Vaccination clinics are closed on Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day but a number of test centres remain open on both days operating under limited opening hours. Testing slots can be booked online.
Also from Christmas Day, those aged between 30 and 39 can book an appointment for their Covid-19 booster jab online, with appointments available from December 29th.
