Haughey vote:A standing ovation greeted the reading of a motion to send best wishes to Charles Haughey.

Delegates stamped their feet, whistled and cheered when Brian Jordan of Waterford Ógra Fianna Fáil said: "Our party is a family and blood is thicker than water". He was proposing the motion: "This ardfheis sends best wishes to our former taoiseach Charles Haughey".

When the session chairwoman, Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan, declared the motion carried unanimously, one delegate stood up to object. The Minister formally acknowledged his No vote.

Proposing the motion, Mr Jordan said that as Fianna Fáil approached its 80th year, Mr Haughey was in his. "You have inspired us and given us strength in your battle with cancer. We are proud."

Mr Haughey was not there, but his son, Dublin North Central TD Seán Haughey, was on the platform for the debate.
