London - An English clockmaker's journal, documenting his struggle for recognition as the solver of one of the 18th century's greatest scientific puzzles, is to be auctioned by Sotheby's in December. John Harrison, brought to attention by Dava Sobel's 1996 bestselling novel Longitude, fought to persuade British government officials that his revolutionary clock qualified for a £20,000 reward promised to the first person to work out how to calculate longitude at sea.
