Gunmen have killed 26 villagers and torched three villages in western Sudan, a police spokesman said today.
The spokesman said that on Tuesday the gunmen set fire to Debbah Taira, Um-Haraz al-Umdah and Um-Haraz al-Madrasah villages, all in West Darfur State.
They unleashed "an intensive shootout on the villagers before they withdrew, leaving the dead and wounded persons behind," he said.
A police force is pursuing the gunmen, who are likely local tribesmen, to bring them to justice, said the spokesman.

The motive was not immediately clear. Western Sudan often has tribal clashes and armed banditry.
