London - Buckingham Palace guards may have to trade their genuine bearskin headgear for synthetic substitutes. Britain's animal-loving defence minister, Lord Gilbert, wants a "rational" alternative to real bear skins found as soon as possible, a spokesman has said. The skins - made from the fur of Canadian brown bears dyed black - have been worn since the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
