Rome - Mr David McTaggart (68), the Canadian founder of the campaigning environmental organisation Greenpeace, was killed yesterday in a car crash near his home in Italy, police said.

He founded Greenpeace in 1972 as a direct action organisation, initially to protest against French nuclear tests in the Pacific.

Mr McTaggart's car was in a collision with another car carrying two people at Castiglione del Lago, in the central region of Umbria. The driver of the other car, Mr Dino Belli (71), was also killed. His 74-year-old wife was in a critical condition.
