A 70-YEAR-OLD grandfather is planning to cycle from Dublin to Cork and back this weekend to raise funds for an Irish charity which works in Lesotho.

Gerry Rea, from Bishopstown, Cork, is due to leave the General Post Office in the city at 7am today with the intention of cycling to the Mansion House in Dublin. He will rest overnight and then cycle back to Cork tomorrow morning, with an estimated 4pm arrival time at City Hall. The round trip is 510km (317 miles).

Mr Rea said: “I have chosen to undertake this challenge to raise sponsorship for the Acara Lesotho Build Project, which is building a safe house/halfway house this coming October in Lesotho, southern Africa, for orphans at high risk and for children both infected and affected by HIV/Aids.”

The cycling quest can be sponsored by sending a cheque to Acara Lesotho Build Project, 20 Stephen Street Lower, Dublin 2.
