Moscow - Ms Nadezhda Stalin, a granddaughter of the Soviet dictator, died of cancer yesterday aged 57. She was the only member of his family to keep the name Stalin. The dictator's other grandchildren adopted his old Georgian surname Dzhugashvili.

Nadezhda studied at a theatre school but did not graduate and married the son of writer Alexander Fadeyev, a radio station said. Stalin, who died in 1953, had eight grandchildren.
