The Minister of State, Mr Stagg, repeated the Government's concern over the UK nuclear industry at a meeting with the British ambassador in Dublin yesterday.

According to a statement, he told the ambassador, Ms Veronica Sutherland, of the State's "dissatisfaction and deep misgivings" at the pollution of the Irish Sea by the Sellafield/Thorp complex; the proposed deep underground storage of radioactive waste in Cumbria; the increasing danger of a major accident arising from the continuous use of the ageing Magnox reactor; and the privatisation of the British nuclear industry "that may lead to safety taking second place to profits".

He also sought improvements in the flow of information to the Government about leaks and accidents at British nuclear plants.
