New York Stock Exchange interim Chairman Mr John Reed today named Goldman Sachs
Group President John Thain as the exchange's new chief executive.

Mr Thain will take up his new post on January 15th. Mr Reed said he will work with Mr Thain to find a person to succeed him as chairman as he was not interested in remaining in the post indefinitely, though he would consider remaining on the board if asked.

Mr Reed added that a candidate for head of exchange regulation will be named shortly.
