The rematch between Mr James Gogarty and Mr Garrett Cooney SC for the Murphy group, which had been eagerly awaited by the public gallery at Dublin Castle, was as acrimonious as expected.

Several times Mr Cooney appealed to Mr Justice Flood in a seemingly vain bid to stop Mr Gogarty "slandering" his clients.

Asked by Mr Justice Flood to restrain himself, Mr Gogarty said: "I gave every document in my possession [to the tribunal] which he hasn't done. Oh Jesus."

On being asked if he could restrain his comments, "even prayerful ones", he said "I'm looking to the Man Above to help me because I'm depending on him."
