The husband of murder victim, Mrs Philomena Gillane, was returned for trial yesterday on a charge of assaulting a garda. Mr Pat Gillane, of Glenbrack, Gort, was sent for trial at Galway Circuit Court next April 23rd.
Mr Gillane, who appeared at Gort District Court, denies charges of unlawfully assaulting Garda William Beirne, causing him actual bodily harm at Ballindereen, Co Galway, last May 7th and with causing £253 worth of damage to a patrol car on the same occasion.
Supt Paul Mockler, prosecuting, applied to have Mr Gillane returned for trial on the charges as well as an additional charge of common assault of Garda Beirne on the same date. Judge Al O'Dea ordered that the defendant be returned for trial and granted him bail on a surety of £500.
