A rocket fired by militants in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip struck southern Israel today, causing no injuries, the Israeli military said.

The rocket, which landed near the Israeli city of Ashkelon, was one of a few to hit the Jewish state since a January 18th ceasefire between Hamas and Israel after a 22-day assault on the Gaza Strip.

Israel usually responds to such rocket fire by attacking Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.

Some 1,300 Palestinians were killed, including an estimated 700 civilians, according to a Gaza human rights group, in Israel's offensive. Thirteen Israelis - 10 soldiers and three civilians hit by Hamas rockets - were killed.
