Copious rain is the gardener's friend, not just because it remoistens soil which became parched during July, but because it makes conditions beautifully soft for pulling weeds. Even if you don't have time to do a major weed clean-out after it rains, concentrate on dandelion, dock and other tap-rooted intruders. Impossible to remove in their entirety in dry weather, they slip out pretty cleanly from damp soil. Don't forget the ones in the lawn.

In the salad garden, sow seeds of rocket, purslane, lambs lettuce and American land cress. The latter is deliciously peppery and is wonderful with a light oil and soy sauce dressing.
