A solution of acid was found in a bottle of wine that led to three women being taken to hospital, it was confirmed yesterday. A Garda spokesman in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, said they were investigating how the solution got into the bottle.

Other bottles of the French wine, Beaudat Merlot, have checked out clear. The full batch of the brand in the country has been withdrawn from sale. A woman is still detained in Portlaoise General Hospital suffering from mouth burns.
