Gardaí in Limerick have opened a murder inquiry in the case of a man found dead yesterday following what they now say was a violent assault.

The man, officially named by gardaí this evening as Liam Donovan (59), of St Senan's Terrace, Croom, was found dead outside his home early yesterday morning. Reports said he had suffered stab wounds.

In a statement, the Garda press office said that as a result of the postmortem on Mr Donovan's body, the inquiry has now been declared a murder investigation.

"The victim died as a result of a violent assault. For operational reasons we will not be releasing further details of the post mortem," the Garda statement added.
