Gardaí are to undertake a major road safety operation between the 10th and 15th June as part of a campaign to alter driver behaviour and reduce the number of lives lost on Irish roads.
Operation Safeguard will focus on improving compliance with the law among drivers, with seat belt wearing; excessive speed; drink driving; young driver and HGV/pedestrian behaviour the main targets.
The operation will target national primary and secondary routes with high visibility patrolling and checkpoints as well covert checks and behaviour monitoring patrols taking place.
The Garda Commissioner said that he will augment the operation with a temporary allocation of 275 Gardaí who have recently completed training at the Garda College.
